Go back is time-limited—usually 10 days after a Windows version upgrade—and needs the previous installation files. Check Settings > System > Recovery before deleting Windows.old. Removing a monthly update uses a different menu.
| Goal | Where to check | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Undo a Windows version upgrade | Settings > System > Recovery > Go back | Limited window; upgrade files required |
| Remove a monthly update | Update history > Uninstall updates | Some updates cannot be removed |
| Free space by deleting old installation | Previous Windows installation cleanup | Removes rollback files; irreversible |
Check the rollback option first
When the option is available, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. Microsoft says the window is usually 10 days. Keep Windows.old and $windows.~bt, remove accounts added after upgrading, and have the upgrade USB available if you used one.
Personal files remain, but post-upgrade apps and drivers and changes to Settings are removed. Back up important files before recovery.
Match the fix to the update
Deleting the previous Windows installation removes files needed for the major-upgrade rollback, and Microsoft describes that cleanup as irreversible. Do not clear it until you have decided you no longer need that route. Commands cannot be assumed to recreate rollback files after the recovery window has expired.
If a particular monthly update caused the issue, use the separate update route: Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled. This is not the same as returning to the previous Windows version. For security updates, read Microsoft’s risks and current repair guidance first.
Before cleanup
- Decide whether the issue followed a version upgrade or one update.
- Check for Go back in Recovery before deleting old installation files.
- Assume cleanup removes the rollback route once its files are deleted.
